Sunday session 4.5.14

The spaces that appealed to me this week all seem to have a little quirkiness to them, I must be going through another “wacky is wonderful” design stage, This happens to me every now and then when I’ve worked on one too many boring all white interior projects, or when a client asks me for something beige… and my eyebrow starts to twitch.

The rug, the quaint chairs, the pendant light and the wine…this room has it all for me

Who loves blackboard walls? why have regular walls when you can write on them?! Great desk, this could be used as a funky dining table with mismatched bright coloured chairs down either side and an ottoman at each end

There is NOTHING in this room i don’t like- how very girly and sweet without being contrived

This bookcase is a clever room divider in a studio apartment. Artwork whimsically placed on the wall and bits and bobs on the shelves amongst a collection of books, this could very easily be in my place

“Mirror mirror on the wall” is this the finest lounge room of them all? Grey does not usually appeal to me much but I like this and i am not yet sure why
dark walls modern furniture
Rainbow done well, this little alcove invites you in and makes you want to stay awhile looking at interesting things on shelves or staring up at the fantastic pendant light
Eames chairs with vintage
I think I have featured this image before but I like ti so much that I’m showing you again. Eames chairs- always in style, but looking especially lovely in mixed colours against a charcoal grey wall with the warmth of the parquetry floor. This is a bold move teaming warm timber with a grey but it works very well here. Wouldn’t it be nice to have such high ceilings? I dream!

whats not to love- brickwork, vintage cushions, letters and a swing- when can I move in?

Clever use of mirrors to make this home seem bigger than it is, also the use of minimalist furniture such as armless sofas to give the illusion of more space

I’m not sure if it is the red and yellow combination or the quirky furniture that grabs me but i like this room. Red and yellow are colours that are ingrained is us to represent food and eating after years of brainwashing from fastfood companies marketing (so are ideal colours for a kitchen or dining room)
This space could easily have fallen into the plain jane category if it wasn’t for those gorgeous oversized lights. Timber , black and white is always on trend but those lights shift this room from nice to SEXY

The blackened cupboards in this are exactly what i would like in my own kitchen, Bentwood chairs, subway tiles and a knife rack- all kitchen essentials to achieve a pared back modern look without falling trap to the overdone all white kitchen look
Tom Dixon black eames
I love books and Tom dixon lights so this room is all pretty good in my eyes, the black eames chair teamed with some elegant timber pieces- perfection!

Oh and I read a couple of articles that came across my desktop worth mentioning.

Got a small (i mean tiny!) studio or apartment? this article is for you. Have you got lots of knick knacks…and stuff? the apartment featured here is full of things from all over the world, my little house is quite similar actually with little treasures I have picked up over the years travelling, it can be hard to display them without cluttering a space but it can be done with some planning.

Warner music have a new office space that has been well designed in a warehouse type of set up, I could happily work  in this space- which is how i evaluate good commercial design- would I be willing to go to work here day in day out? yes = well designed.

It is a long weekend here in Darwin this weekend and in true darwin style it has been jam packed full of events whilst other weekends have absolutely ZILCH happening – well down Darwin City Council / NT Gov you really fucked that up didn’t you?

If you are languishing at home wondering what to do there is somethign wrong with you, your choices are:  The Darwinlife magazine home and lifestyle expo,  the Nightlcliff seabreeze festival that the fella and I checked out lastnight where we had some good market food and listened to a great local performer whose name I was going to remember and feature here, but of course I’ve forgotten , then theres Kamfari if adrenaline fueled motor sports and mud are your thing and lastly the Taste festival that I am headed to in a few hours to, you know…taste stuff. Mostly wine.
