The other day my partner sent me a link to look at with the subject something along the lines of “Screw the house let’s get some shipping containers” …. Now, we have only briefly thrown around some rough ideas about the house we are planning on building (our first) so while I had a fleeting “oh how sweet” moment as I thought of how he is as passionate as I am about this whole situation, I also had about 3 seconds of pure panic while images of the industrial kind of sea containers I had recently seen in that Tom Hanks Captain Phillip movie filled my mind. Then I CLICKED on the link and as it loaded what a surprise – I could very happily live in any one of these homes so full credit to the fella for finding this – he is a keeper and I look forward to living happily ever after in any home he sees fit to build us.
Seeing as I have been writing these magazine articles for a couple of years now I think its time to store them somewhere, Well somewhere other than on a tiny little usb stick amongst 20 others in a silver tray on my desk which is piled high with paid bills, bits of fabric covered in dusk underneath a pile of pictures and magazine clippings of stuff and ideas that I haven’t got to yet, and probably wont get to anytime soon.
Yes this is a much better place to store them I think. Here they are – the ones I can find right now anyway, in no particular order because I’m just not that organised.
Darwin life magazine is a monthly magazine that I write for about all things design related. Check em out right here http://darwinlifemag.com.au/darwinlife-magazine/
I read an article titled “colour my world” sometime in the late 90’s and I have kept it all this time as it is what inspired me to become a Designer. I have photocopies of it , I love it that much and infact one is stuck on a canvas on the wall of my office, I will take a photo one of these days to upload it as it is very dear to me.
The article is about a Spanish designer (of so so many things) called Agatha Ruiz De La Prada and her apartment which is the wildest most cheerful technicolour creative spasm inducing homes I have ever come across STILL to this day. Imagine red and white polka dots over walls & curtains then climbing up over random pieces of furniture, a bright turquoise floor teamed with punches of bright magenta pink , acid yellow and lime green. I think the article references is as a place that Andy Warhol would feel quite at home, an “assault on the senses” and describes the effect it has on you as being akin to “spending an afternoon crashed out in the children’s playground at ikea”. Here are snippets of her website and fashion lines which should give you an idea of what I am talking about. It is pure design porn to me and I love it all. Whenever I feel uninspired I look at this article and think back to being a teenager wanting to take on the design world and it gets me right back on track again. 😀In tribute to this fabulous woman and even more fabulous apartment I have collected some of my favourite coloured furniture bits and pieces. “Let there be colour!” yes indeed, let there be lots.
Happy new year! I am getting in early so that I can can spend the last few days of holiday time doing what I do best aside from being a total design extraordinaire – Which is being a total sloth in bed, or on the couch, or on the patio, or by the pool…you get the idea.
While I think of it though I just wanted to share some things from our recent holiday at Balnarring on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula. We got home today and I’m already missing it. I had a split christmas this year meaning that we pulled off the task of spending it with both our families instead of choosing one. We did this by having chrissy lunch with my family then jumping on a plane late that afternoon and flying down to stay with the fellas folks and celebrating christmas all over again on boxing day with his relos- was great fun I can recommend it to anyone who loves celebrating and wants to prolong the feasting and champagne guzzling for as long as possible.
Whilst there we did some house hunting and dreaming of where we would like to buy around that way in the coming year….or years. These homes are all lovely and I am dreaming for now as to us actually purchasing one of this GRAND scale being our first home, but dreaming is good. You will notice a recurring theme of timber and steel and concrete, 3 of my favourite elements in a house. Elegant while still being raw, tough, and durable.
Heres a more detailed article showing a style of home that is quite common around this area: http://www.completehome.com.au/be-inspired/articles/grand-designs-australia-balnarring-rammed-earth-house
So thats me for the year, I hope the new year brings you all that makes you happy and look forward to sharing more and getting better at this whole blogging thing and getting a regular schedule happening.
Whoo hoo we have all made it through the year, its nearly the end, holidays are within sight and santa is coming shit I love December!!!
Oh yeah and its my birthday TOMORROW 😀 (hence why I am doing the wrap up early this month as I may be lovedrunk and in holiday mode after that), I have decided I am turning 25 again this year, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve turned 25 now but its not as many times as I turned 21 yet so I will stick to this fabled age a little longer. I think I managed to be 21 for 6 , possibly 7 years until my little brother turned 21 and actually became ‘older than me’.Then I had to adjust my lie and so we became twins !…. until he turned 23 , then I accepted that I should probably be 25 . This is all off track though so back to what i have looked at this month and on to what I have in store for next year.
December stuff I have had going on is as follows:
I came across this crazy interior – check it out and see what you think, hers a sneak peak so you know what you are in for:
Striped rugs- I don’t know what it is about them but I seem to like them a lot. I don’t actually HAVE one but you know how I know that I like them alot?? ‘Cos I have a desktop full of pictures of them and I don’t remember doing a single job for a client featuring one recently so I think you call that OBSESSED. I am obsessed with striped rugs for the moment.
This month I did some stuff for some people, chose some colours… mostly white and grey for their home exteriors with afew splashes of colour here and there but no-one is ever as bold as I would like them to be.
PLUS new website design!!!! Possibly the most exciting thing to happen this whole year is happening at the very end of it – Lady Darwin.com.au is getting a makeover! Now while I do like my little site and all its pretty pictures and personalised information overload I think I’ve outgrown it and its time to move on and my webgeek extraordinaire & legend of all things computer related Fiona Fell who is described as ”
Your trusty web geek with the smarts to DESIGN, DEVELOP and HOST your website, the holy trinity of simplicity! Kick your business’s bottom line into gear with an awesome website.”
and who you can contact here is sorting this out right now so by the time you read this it will already be on the new style site (and you will be probably wondering what the old site looked like) anyway- massively exciting like I said.
