I am having a large obsession with brick this week. This may have been triggered by my researching the renovations of old historical pubs (like this one at the Guildford hotel) for an upcoming project that I am quoting on but it could also be due to the fact I am whitewashing some more walls in my little house.
My love for brick is longstanding and all encompassing, I like old brick and new brick, modern brick and vintage brick, dark brick and light brick, painted brick and chipped brick but mostly “charming brick” as I like to call it, Bricks that have patches and imperfections, little inconsistencies …brick that has character like a random stone you found on an adventure or the weathered wise face of an old man who walks by your house.
Some of my earliest memories are in brick homes, I grew up in a light coloured brick home in Fannie Bay and would visit loved ones in dark red or brown brick homes Perth with open fireplaces and I can vividly remember marvelling as a child at how different the southern homes were from our more open plan, tropical styled homes in the Territory.
For me brick has always been associated with family and good times, it feels safe and comforting and was something that drew me to my own little home when I first viewed it for sale, It was old, musty and dated with smoke and dust laden curtains but it had good bones and perfect bare brick walls all through it that screamed out to me to breath new life into and so I set about on a renovation project that is still going 5 years later.
I have worked on hundreds of kitchen renovations over the years yet my own little kitchen with its simple ground back and sealed brick splash back and walls remains my all time favourite kitchen splash back that I have done.
Here is some brick inspiration and spaces I love.
