23.4.17 ‘Pretty distractions’

It seems to be that when I am busiest I get the most new leads and clients contacting me yet when I am sitting on my arse pushing my toes into the sand and wondering where my big next job is going to come from noone is calling my phone then are they? No new emails are landing in my inbox and no contact forms are being sent from my website. It’s like the universe senses when I am in super productive mode and decides to hammer me with more and more work to test me. I see you universe and I raise you! 😉

In the past month while I have been juggling 3 renovations and a styling job I have had no less than 5 potential new clients contact me all with “urgent” requests for quotes. Messages have piled up in the inbox that I only check every few days with desperate pleas of “Please call me back I need your assistance with XYZ”  … I feel both happily popular and slightly horrified at the same time as I have no idea how I will time manage myself through this busy little spell.

A timely reminder for me that busy is good.

Ok me aside there are lots of things happening in the design world with the Salone Del Mobile Milano … commonly known as the comparatively boring sounding “Milan furniture fair’ which has just wrapped up and which I stalk every year with the keen attention of a jilted lover looking up their ex on facebook.

With so much on offer in Milan over the week I find it hard to know where to even start as far as covering it goes but you can see an overview by Dezeen here and there are some good short video clips showcasing some of the furniture ranges on James Richardson’s facebook page here.

I am sure that all the big design mags will be doing wrap ups of it later this week so keep an eye on Vogue, Habitus and DQ if you want to see more as they all usually do a good briefing.

My favourite exhibits so far seen are these ones:

The tropical entry to ‘La refuge’ is not unlike my tropical home here in Darwin Designer Marc Ange said of the piece ‘Le Refuge is a place where one finds comfort and peace. It is the projection of a childhood memory.

Nendo’s presented (amongst other things) these thin silicon shaped like vases submerged in a tank of water to create a marine and design combination that attempts to re-establish the relationship between vase and water with colour boundaries.

Named after the Greek word for flora that has no differentiation between stem and leaf, Thallus is an experimental structure investigating form and pattern generated by advanced manufacturing and computational methods. Created by automated additive manufacture as well as hot-wire cutting technology, the structure presents the on-going investigations into robotic assisted design undertaken by Zaha Hadid Architects’ Computational Design research group; demonstrating what can now be achieved in terms of mechanisation and customisation in the architecture, construction and engineering industries.
Louis Vuitton blew it out of the water with this year’s Objets Nomades collection at Palazzo Bocconi. Not only was the Palazzo venue stunning, but each Objets Nomades piece was more inspiring than the next. The 10 new items unveiled by select designers included hanging chairs by the Campana brothers (further below), along with a playful red sofa in the shape of clouds.

London-based design brand Sé transformed its regular spot at Spazio Rossana Orlandi into a perfectly polished pad. Showcasing all three of the brand’s collections as well as new pieces by Nika Zupanc, Sé’s Milanese home channeled the elegance of the early 20th century with four room sets including a lounge, dining room, dressing room, and salon.
The works of 11 Australian designers were exhibited together within a 12th-century church courtyard and oratory during Milan design week. All pretty good in one way or another.

Right – enough from me for one day. If you need help with any design projects please form an orderly line just over there in May please … Also try to be organised with your renovations and ask me NOW for work in the coming months, don’t call me the week before your deadlines are upon you because I will laugh AT you not with you.

Happy Sunday to you!
