Sunday session 28.2.16

Design is the method of putting form and content together. Design, just as art, has multiple definitions; there is no single definition. Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated.”

This quote came across my desktop this week and it made me feel better about having scattered projects strewn across my desk. I am getting little bits done on all of them I swear, but I also can’t see the end of at least half of them and I was wondering if this is what my desk is always going to be like at home, with jobs in varying degrees of completion lying around waiting for me to pick them up again and give them some love and attention before moving on to the next one that excites me. When I read that quote though I realised that this is all ok, as it is all part of the creative process and non creative people just won’t understand this.

My ‘favourite project’ of the moment (Yes, the bar one if you guessed that) has been delayed due to planning approvals, building stuff and other boring things and I feel a little bit like I had a friend who has now abandoned me for a few months. It will still all go ahead and be fabulous, just not for a few months now though.

On to other things though….

A big congratulations to a fellow designer Crystal Thomas (who was based here in NT for awhile) who has recently launched a new business NORTH which was just featured in this Habitus magazine article.  Promoting local indigenous art by using them in upholstery, cushions and wall hangings has been a passion of mine since I returned to Darwin in 2006 but a lack of time (and organisation) means I haven’t done anything further in promoting the many talented artists that populate the remove areas of my beloved NT so I was thrilled when I saw that this creative chicky is taking this to the next level and will get some much needed promotion for local artists. Currently North only represents 3 artists but I will follow this brand and hope to see this increase as the brand builds momentum so please spread the word.

While we are on the subject of local there are some amazing tropical homes being planned at the moment and thankfully there is looking to (finally) be a move away from builders slapping together brick hot boxes without any consideration for open plan living or airflow. I am thrilled to be a part of this design process as I feel like I have been banging on about this for years with noone really listening but there are now several new developments due to be announced this coming dry season, all of which will have the interiors designed by … you guessed it…little me! 😀  I can’t wait to share more.

Many doors seem to be opening for me this year 😉

Ok that’s all I have time for this week while I madly put together furniture selections for one person, an electrical plan for another, colours for a bloody crazy person and do some custom artwork for another pain in the arse who has more money than brains, all of this I have been working on while I am trying to pick wedding songs, make flowers crowns and generally keep up with my dirty washing pile and making time to walk the hound. Yes, Life is currently coo coo … but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

More stuff to read if you are still in need of design, or are  just killing time:

I found this San Diego artists house while instagraming and had to share it, her home is like many of the artists homes that I grew up visiting. Cosy, jam packed and full of creative energy! I also couldn’t help but notice she refers other home the same way I do of mine…my beautiful mess 🙂

Another completely opposite home that I came across belonging to Lindy Klim of Milk & Co fame. This home is in beautiful Bali, one of my favourite places to recharge the batteries.

Another home tour, A Swedish farmhouse that makes me want to pack up and move to the country.
